Carmit Hassine

Carmit Hassine (b. 1977) lives and works in Tel Aviv. A graduate of the Midrasha School of Art, Beit Berl Academic College, Israel (2018), she holds a BFA from Libera Accademia di Belle Arti (specializing in photography), Florence (2006), and has studied privately under several leading Israeli and international artists, over the years.
Her work spans mainly installation and sculpture in unconventional materials, including silicone and charcoal powder.
Her sculptural works offer interpretations of various body parts while crossbreeding different bodies, such as organic and artificial. Her oeuvre consists of several clusters of works, each typified by different materials and techniques. The silicone-based works echo the coloration and materiality of the human body. Their colors range from those of a vital body to those of a sick or dying body. The blackness of the charcoal powder sculptures reflects the essence of the material and the sense conveyed by a hard and durable organic substance that is temporarily presented as skeletal and powdery.
The essence of the images is often determined by the use of paramedical objects employed as bodily aids. The sculptures corresponding with various prostheses strive to function as extensions of the human body.
In other instances, the image draws away from the original object, presenting itself as a mutation between the natural and the artificial.
Hassine’s work has been included in numerous group exhibitions in Israel and overseas, and she has won international awards in two photography exhibitions.
