Since 1998, the award-winning Jaffa Theatre has been home to the Arab Al-Saraya Theatre and the Local Hebrew Theatre. These companies collaborate to promote knowledge and cross-cultural understanding through plays, cultural projects, workshops, festivals, and educational programs. The Jaffa Theatre and its resident companies work together and independently, in Hebrew and in Arabic, with the participation of Arab and Jewish artists, for audiences comprised of individuals from Jaffa’s many multi-ethnic communities.
Both theatres have separately, artistic and administrative directors, producers, marketing directors and chairpersons and a general manager serving both companies. Each theatre has board members who convene regularly. Besides ongoing productions in the theatre, performances take place in the peripheries within Arab and Jewish communities. The Jaffa Theatre has also performed internationally, in countries such as Poland, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Spain, Germany, England, and South Korea. The theatre also produce major festivals, including the International Children’s Theatre Festival and the Arab Hebrew Women’s Festival, which host multiethnic, multinational, and multicultural audiences and artists. The Jaffa Theatre continues to serve as a model for creative collaboration between conflicting ethnic groups, different cultures, different people, and different languages.
