Matan Levy
Matan Lior Levy was born in 1998. At age two Matan left Israel with his family to live in New York. There, he studied piano at the local conservatory from the age of five. At nine he began to study trumpet at his elementary school, while continuing with piano lessons.
At age 10 Matan and his family returned to live in Israel where he continued his trumpet studies at the Tel Aviv – Yafo Music Center. Later, Matan transferred to the Israeli Music Conservatory “Shtriker” in Tel Aviv, where his focus moved to jazz. At the Conservatory Matan was a recipient, for two years in a row, of the Ron Baron Scholarship. Matan participated in the Shtriker youth jazz delegation to Berlin. In summer 2015 Matan participated in the Berklee College of Music’s Jazz Workshop in Boston. This program gathered sixteen young jazz musicians from around the world to study and play music together for five weeks. At the end of the Berklee program Matan received an invitation to attend Berklee as a scholarship undergraduate BFA student, including a full four year tuition, room and board. The same summer, Matan performed in the Annual International Jazz Festival held in Eilat as part of the Festival Youth Ensemble.
Today Matan is a graduate of Tel Aviv’s Ironi Aleph High School of Performing Arts. He completed the Youth Jazz Program at the Shtriker Conservatory, and he continues his private trumpet studies with Trumpeter Yigal Melzer a member of the IPO. Matan has matriculated for a BFA in Jazz Music at the Shtriker Conservatory Joint Israeli and New York’s New School Jazz Program. Matan Is a recipient of the American Israel Cultural Foundation’s Sharett Scholarship for Jazz Trumpet.
