Dancing With Tears in My Eyes by Gil Zablodovsky
Curator: Sofie Berzon MacKie
Gil Zablodovsky's solo exhibition 'Dancing with Tears in My Eyes' opens on the 18th of May at Grosso Modo gallery.
Gallery talk with the artists and curator:
The exhibition borrowed its name from Ultravox's hit from 1984, inspired by the anxiety over nuclear war and describing the last ecstatic dance before total destruction. The exhibition is a journey towards catharsis. It embodies elements of opening gates of emotional dams, releasing with the moving water, moments of disillusionment and elevation. Taking place in a cinematic amusement park atmosphere- glowing pink neon lights, materials reflecting joyfully and deeply, morphed voices under a shining disco ball, and body parts encapsuled in television screens. Busy public spaces meet the vulnerable presence of the body- voice, skin, limbs. Gil uses his body as a tool to discuss the boundaries of his existence, asking to be seen and mark his place in a social order not tailored to his fit.
