The Noon Witch – Dvořák
Violin Concerto in B minor – Elgar

Tales from Czech and Norwegian folklore appear alongside early twentieth century London. Don’t miss our fabulous young violin soloist, Charlie Lovell-Jones!
The Czech composer Dvořák loved a good folk tale – in many cases the gloomier the better! Don’t be too alarmed by the title character in his creepy piece, the “Noon Witch”, she’s not real!
Also originating in folklore is “Peer Gynt” – a play by Norwegian dramatist Ibsen set to music by Grieg. The Suite we will play includes the famous “Morning” and “The Hall of the Mountain King”.
By contrast HSO will also play some very English music! John Ireland’s “London Overture” portrays the bustle of London in the 1930s. The Violin Concerto by Elgar is an iconic piece, written for Fritz Kreisler and famously recorded by a teenaged Yehudi Menuhin. Our soloist will be an outstanding up-and-coming young violinist, Charlie Lovell-Jones. Charlie was a category finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2016 – be one of the first to hear him live!
