Ilit Azoulay Presents “Queendom” at the Venice Biennale

Israeli Artist Ilit Azoulay will present "Queendom" at the 59th Biennale in Venice.

"Milk of Dreams" is the theme of the 59th Biennale that is now happening in Venice. "It is a world where everyone can change, be transformed, become something or someone else," says Biennale curator Cecilia Alemani. "Queendom" by Ilit Azoulay fits together naturally with this idea.

Azoulay presents large-scale panoramic photomontages, created from the rich Islamic art collection of Islamic Middle Ages metal vessels created by Prof. David Storm Rice, and donated to the Museum of Islamic Art in Jerusalem following his death in 1962.

Azoulay engages with these archival photographs by scanning, cropping, and changing them on to new data carriers, and the photomontaged images are then digitally “welded” on to scanned metal plates.

Her digital craftwork presents their refined details and figures in a blown up size. This transformation offers an imaginative new perception to read Western attitudes to Islamic civilization.
