New Ghiora Aharoni Exhibition at Textile Museum

The Textile Museum/Cotsen Textile Traces Study Center in Washington, D.C. is holding an exhibition of Ghiora’s textile artworks that explores the narrative, material and metaphorical relationships between text and textiles.

The exhibition, which opened in September 2021, marks the beginning of an inspiring year-long artistic collaboration with the institution, which includes two exhibitions, an on-site research residency, academic symposia and seminars as well as public programs.

On view through April, 2022, the first exhibition features Punjabi shawls – traditionally part of a young woman’s dowry – embroidered with Ghiora’s drawings and texts from a trove of love letters written by his mother when she was a teenager in the 1950s. The exhibition also includes the assemblage sculpture 'Thank God for Making Me a Woman, III' which incorporates a muslin garment traditionally worn by men in pre-modern India. Embroidered by male Muslim artisans in India, these works invite us to reconsider our notions of gender, cultures and patriarchal societies, across time, place and language.

Later in the year, the museum will display a body of new work inspired by Ghiora’s Yemenite heritage. For more information about the exhibitions and the rich program of associated events, please visit the museum's website.
