Out of Place: A Group Exhibition

Lior Neiger is one of 29 artists participating in the group exhibition Out of Place at Fountain St. Gallery, Boston

The group exhibition, “Out of Place” (curated by Jameson Johnson Bar) at Fountain St. Gallery in Boston repositions what it means to belong. Twenty-nine artists offer an expansive interpretation of the theme— spanning several mediums, scales, and forms, the work featured in “Out of Place” could easily be construed as disparate or fragmented. Yet, presented together, these artists contend with structure, familiarity, and acceptance while pushing the boundaries of what it means to belong.

Lior Neiger will present his diptych painting “Half a Person” and “Listen". These paintings depict two famous Boston statues: “Appeal to the Great Spirit” and the statue of Paul Revere. These two equestrian sculptures, both created by sculptor Cyrus Dallin, tell two very different stories. In one, a Native American stretches his arms downward in passivity and acceptance. In the other, the horseman (Paul Revere) is seen in motion; his arm stretches downward to balance himself while riding. Although it is unlikely Dallin intended to portray the Native American in a way that might be perceived as a surrendering posture, it is hard to escape this interpretation, especially when it is juxtaposed with the image of the Paul Revere’s commanding statue. The diptych emphasizes these striking differences, while offering a new connection; the balancing hand in one painting and the praying hand in the other, seem to be reaching toward one another.
