Reality Check – Three Person Show

"Reality Check" at Fountain St. Gallery will feature three contemporary painters: Lior Neiger, Frantz Lexy and Alayna Coverly.

We live in a time in which polarized political views reduce complexity to a single dimension. In Lior Neiger's new body of work, he strives to reverse this reductionism and find complexity in mundane objects—architecture, statues, monuments, and the American flag. Lior is interested in creating historical, political and personal connections that are in plain view but are often overlooked.

In ”Falling” (2018-Columbus Circle, NYC), for example, Lady Liberty stares out of an LED screen at the leaning statue of Columbus. Her gaze is anxious; can she see something that we don’t? Perhaps, like Walter Benjamin’s Angel of History, she can see destruction and wreckage piling up. Perhaps she is just staring at Columbus while the lone navigator keels over: Will he soon be part of the wreckage?

Another painting, “Divided” (2018) is a reaction to the 2018 shooting at the “Tree of Life” synagogue in Pittsburg, PA. While the painting is very personal, it serves as a reminder that the flag will forever stay at half-mast if voices that legitimize racism, xenophobia and gun violence have the upper hand.

Lior Neiger hopes his work prompts the viewer to pause and contemplate.
