Swan Lake, Chemnitz Ballet

Ballet by Eno Peci and Sabrina Sadowska with parts of the original choreography by Lev Ivanov.
Music by Peter Tchaikovsky

In 1871, Peter Tschaikowsky used the summer vacation with his sister to compose the little children's ballet Swan Lake for his nieces and nephews. When in 1875 he received a lucrative composition commission for a new ballet of the Moscow Bolshoi Theater, the libretto was already finished. It combines various legends and fairytales, including the German folk tale Der robbed Schleier by Johann Karl August Musäus. Unlike the later ballets Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, the choreographer Julius Reisinger and Tchaikovsky did not work together here. Due to performance-related cuts and changes, Reisinger's success initially remained unknown. It was not until Lew Ivanov presented the second act with the famous white swans during a commemoration ceremony for Tchaikovsky, who died a year before in 1894, and Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov subsequently rearranged the ballet at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, which made it became world-famous. Since then, 'Swan Lake' has received many interpretations, such as George Balanchine (New York, 1951), Vladimir Bourmeister (Moscow, 1956), John Cranko (Stuttgart, 1963), Mats Ek (Cullberg Ballet, 1987), John Neumeier (Hamburg, 2002) and the purely male occupied recast by Matthew Bourne (London, 1995).

For the Chemnitz Swan Lake, the young choreographer Eno Peci from Tirana (Albania) was chosen. Since 2000 he is a member of the Vienna State Opera Ballet, and since 2009 he is a solo dancer of the Ballet of the Vienna State Opera. At the same time he began to develop his own ballets for the Vienna State Ballet, and the Ballet Academy of the Vienna State Opera. Chemnitz Ballet receives support from the Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin for the famous "white acts". Thus, with the poignant music of Tchaikovsky, this Swan Lake in Chemnitz becomes a reminiscence of the romantic dance fairytale in which love and death, longing and resignation, human and fable world merge into a sensual, touching ballet evening.
