The Israel Chamber Orchestra, led by its artistic director Ariel Zuckermann, will play Gilad Hochman's orchestral work "A Voice in the Wilderness" as part of its program "All Roads Lead to Rome" (January 8, 9 and 11). This, in addition to Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Chopin's Piano concerto no. 2 in F minor and Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 4 ("Italian") in A Major, op. 90.
Hochman's work draws its power Nava Semel's poem “Speak Desert to Me”, especially written for this piece's creation, which is rooted in the Biblical text of Isaiah (40:3). Structurally, the music constructed as chain of descriptive episodes, arising from moods, emotions and feelings that the poetic text triggers. Parallel to the musical “word painting” of the desert landscape where that poem’s protagonists exist, the piece relates to the topic of relationships, physical distance and emotional longing, the search for a soul mate, and finally – to the hope that the voice will return, the common language of those two.
