Ceres Gallery is pleased to present artist Hagar Fletcher’s latest work, The Trial of the Trail, on exhibition.

Fletcher’s sculpture and painting installation is an abstract rendering of the artist’s view of the pain and hardship experienced by migrants seeking refuge in countries other than their own. Their long and exhausting journey becomes ever darker as they seek shelter, light and safety. Enduring essentially the unendurable, the world’s current migrants are following in the footsteps of much of humanity to navigate a harsh trail to a better future.

Hagar Fletcher draws on her own deep well of empathy to create sculptural forms that are expressive, with slowly realized associations, yet always open to interpretation. Each is loosely figurative; each is not quite human (perhaps the view of some regarding migrants). Fletcher brings our attention to this issue subtly but insistently.
The paintings are free associations about the story of migration. The sculptures are all made of found materials that are first manipulated and then encased in mud, a metaphor for the trials faced by all desperate people.
