Liliana Farber Wins 2020 Lumen Prize

New York-based, Uruguayan-Israeli artist Liliana Farber took home the 2020 Lumen Prize Still Image Award at last Wednesday’s virtual awards ceremony and a cash prize of $1,000.

Farber’s winning work, “Terram in Aspectu”, is a series of satellite photography generated by a machine learning algorithm trained on images from Google Earth. The images show non-existent islands that appeared in historical maps but were proven not to exist. The work questions the origins of the historical record and asks us to re-evaluate our notions of absolute knowledge.
