Ness Miara

Ness Miara is a fine-art sea photographer based in the Haifa area and a surfer for more than 40 years. For the past 11 years, he has devoted his artistic practice to photographing from within the water along Israel’s Mediterranean coast. The sea is his home and his primary source of inspiration.

He seeks out fleeting moments in which the sea’s energy takes form through light, movement, texture, and color, transforming water into something almost sculptural. Working from inside the sea allows him to reveal hidden perspectives that cannot be seen from shore, as well as formations that often pass too quickly for the human eye to register.

His work is an ongoing personal inquiry into the powerful connection between people and the sea. He takes a documentary approach, using both fast and slow shutter speeds to express the flow of water, the movement of waves, and their constantly changing character.

The creative process continues through careful editing and the deliberate selection of printing materials that complement the story of each image. He presents his work in his home studio at Kibbutz HaHotrim, where every piece carries its own title and narrative.

Through his photography, he aims to deepen people’s connection to the sea, celebrate surfing and water-sports culture, and raise awareness of the need to protect the sea and beaches. Ocean art has established a strong international presence; his ambition is to contribute a distinct Israeli-Mediterranean voice to the field and reveal Israel’s Mediterranean waters from a fresh perspective.
